Liberal KS ˜ Lawrence Wayne Miller, 92, was born April 17, 1918 in Liberal, KS to Samuel A. & Susie Little Miller. ˜˜ He graduated from Liberal High School in 1935.˜ He attended Ft. Hays State College and the University of Minnesota graduating in 1940.˜ He returned to Liberal where he was a funeral director and embalmer in Kansas and Oklahoma. ˜ In 1941 he volunteered for military service and was assigned to the Medical Detachment 137th Infantry, 35th Division. He landed on Omaha Beach July 6, 1944.˜ He served in France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Holland and Germany receiving five battle stars and the Bronze Star for rescuing wounded soldiers under enemy fire. ˜ Following his discharge he returned to Liberal and became a partner with his father and brother Wendell Miller in the Miller Mortuary.˜ Upon his fathers retirement in 1965 he became sole owner of the firm until selling it to Jim Kaufman in 1980 when he retired. ˜˜ He married Dorothy Province Stelting in Liberal on December 25, 1949. She preceded him in death November 4, 1998. ˜ He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion, Fargo˜ #300 Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Wichita Consistory,˜˜˜˜˜˜ Midian Shrine.˜ He was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club.˜ He was a life master in the American Contract Bridge League. ˜ He is survived by two sons, Ernie Miller,˜ Larry Miller and wife Diane; three grandchildren, Nate, Zach and Jordan all of Liberal; one brother, Wilbur Miller, Wichita, KS;˜ one sister, Martha Brown, Carson City, NV. ˜ Funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Miller Chapel, with Rev. David Randall presiding. ˜ Entombment will in Fielders Mausoleum, Liberal Cemetery. ˜˜ Friends may call at the Miller Mortuary 1-8 P.M.˜ Sunday and 9 A.M.-8 P.M. Monday and 9 P.M. until service time Tuesday. ˜ The family suggests memorials be sent to the Midian Shrine, for transportation of crippled children, in care of the mortuary.
