Rowena Katherine (Kattie) Harris White
Katherine White, 96, beloved Mom, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother joined her Lord and Jesus Christ on Thursday March 17, at her daughter’s home in Wichita.
Katherine was born on a farm west of Emporia, KS, on February 6, 1926 to Elmer R. and Rowena (Stanton) Harris.
In 1943, she graduated from Plains High School and continued her education at Ft. Hays State College receiving an Emergency Teaching Certificate (WWII). She taught at Evergreen Township School in Meade and Bluebell Rural School, and another rural school north of Liberal. She married Edwin L. White on December 21, 1947 at First Christian Church in Hayne, KS. Edwin and Katherine made their home in Liberal.
To this union five beautiful daughters were born.
She received her cosmetology license in 1962. Over the next 56 years in Liberal she was employed at Dottie’s Beauty Shop, Elk Kan Hair and LaVelle's Beauty Shop. Also, a flower shop, furniture store and hostess at the Pancake House. She was a member of the First Christian Church and an active member of their Women’s Church Group. She enjoyed bowling, square dancing, playing Farkle, Bunco and Mexican Train with family and friends. After the death of her husband of 49 years, she moved to Wichita, to be near her daughters. She enjoyed traveling with her daughters on cruises to Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Alaska. She also traveled to Hawaii, England, Scotland and Paris; and enjoyed many bus tours with friends throughout the US.
She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Edwin in 1994, two brothers Gail, and Lloyd Harris; three sisters Alice Burkhardt, Vera Mae Winfrey, and Rose Hall. She is survived by her brother, Elvin Harris (Henrietta), Plains, her daughters, Priscilla Taggart, Wichita, Kay Hatfield (Jimmy), Fayetteville AR, Billie Keller (Allen), Wellington, Jolyn Apsey (Joe), Wichita and Sonja Sutherland (Mitch), McPherson. Grandchildren, Stacha, Shannon, Robyn, Lori, Kyle, Adam, Erin, Allison, Evan, Ryan, Tracee, Jayme, Cody and Brad. Great-Grandchildren, Felicia, Skyler, Austin, Logan, Anna, Jackson, Olivia, Violet, Makayla, Isaac, Easton, Carter, Carson, Brooke, Paige, Mason and Axel. A Great-Great-Grandson Waylon is expected in April 2022. Sister-in-Law, Samantha Stuck (Junior), Cushing, OK. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and family members.
Funeral Service at 11:00 Monday March 21, 2022 at Miller Mortuary Chapel, Liberal. Burial will follow in Liberal City Cemetery.
