George D. Mead, 93, formerly of Liberal, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Pioneer Manor in Hugoton, Kansas. He was born on May 4, 1926 to Everett and Georgia (Dudley) Mead at Pratt, Kansas. On September 23, 1946 he married Dorcas M. Forbes at Liberal, KS.; she preceded him in death in 2017. George moved to Liberal as a young boy. He started working at the Southwest Daily Times as a Pressman when he was 14 years old. He enlisted into the US Army where he served in the Air Corp during the end of WWII. Upon returning home he went back to work at the Newspaper where he later retired from in 1992. Shortly after he and Dorcas were married they built their family home. George enjoyed tinkering and had also operated a small engine repair shop out of his home. He was an active member of the community where he had served as a Scout Master with the Boy Scouts, rode with the Silver Eagles Motorcycle Club for various charitable events. He was a member of various organizations including the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Southwest Daily Times Bowling Team. George had a great fascination for Air Craft and loved flying small planes; he later was a volunteer at the Mid America Air Museum. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, vacationing throughout the United States and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Liberal. George is survived by Three Daughters- Tania Jo Zembik of Benson, AZ, Linda Malee McGill and husband Stan of Moscow, KS, Mary Lois Russell of Big Lake, TX; Son, George Douglas Mead of Big Lake, TX; 7 Grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren & Six Great Great Grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents, One Daughter in Law- Janet Lynn Mead; One Grandson- Nicholas McGill; Son in Law- Joseph Zembik. Funeral Services will be 2:00 pm Thursday February 13th, at the Miller Mortuary Chapel, with Pastor Don Quattlebum, officiating. Burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery. There will be no public Visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Mid America Air Museum in care of Miller Mortuary PO Box 826 Liberal, KS 67905-0826.
