Gene Eldon Myrick, 87, of Liberal, passed away on Thursday July 18, 2019 at Homestead Estates in Liberal, KS. He was born June 7, 1932 to William Harmon and Emma (Bible) Myrick at his family's farmstead, "Jericho" in rural Moscow, KS. On January 14, 1951 he married Glenna E. Clodfelter at the First Baptist Church in Liberal, KS. Glenna preceded him in death on November 7, 2014. Gene attended rural Stevens County schools and was a graduate of Liberal High School, class of 1950. He worked 35 years in the natural gas industry including Northern Natural Gas and National Helium, retiring from Panhandle Eastern Pipeline where he started as a "Grunt" and retired as a Superintendent. During his years with Panhandle Eastern he was transferred in and out of this area six times. After retiring from Panhandle he went to work part-time at Miller Bike & Hobby Shop where he developed a love for rebuilding bicycles and giving them to children. He was active within the community where he served on numerous boards including the USD 480 School Board in1972; the Airport Advisory Board, the Southwest Kansas Vo-Tech Advisory Board, the Seward County Fair Board, Seward County Council for Aging and the Southwest Medical Center's Board of Trustees from 2005-2008. Gene and Glenna enjoyed attending garage sales, riding their tandem bicycle and shopping for antiques. Gene collected a variety of antique cars. Gene and Glenna would dress in period clothing while attending car shows in their 1928 Model A Roadster. He also enjoyed tinkering in his shop, watching the Green Bay Packers and was proud of his family! He was a member and Deacon at the First Baptist Church; at the time of his death, he was a member of First Christian Church. His survivors include one son, Steve Myrick and wife Lori of Lawrence, KS and one daughter, Julie Thayer and husband Bill of San Diego, CA, daughter-in-law Teresa Myrick of Powell, TN, brother-in-law Ron Clodfelter of Liberal, KS, three granddaughters, Rebecca Wagner and husband Eric of Lecompton, KS, Kate Diehl and husband Bob of Evanston, IL, and Amanda Michel of Colorado Springs, Co, two grandsons, Brett Myrick and wife Stephani of Washington DC, Anthony Myrick and wife Kiley of Chicago, Il, and six great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Jeff Myrick and Tim Myrick, two brothers, Ralph Myrick and Philip Myrick and sister, Ione Shuck. A private family burial has taken place at the Liberal City Cemetery. After a private family graveside service, friends are welcome to visit with the family, Saturday, October 5, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Best Western Hotel, 1550 N.
