Elmer Wayne "Toby" Hale, 85, of Liberal, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2017 at the Liberal Good Samaritan Center in Liberal, KS. He was born on December 28, 1931 to Paul and Emma (Ford) Hale at Hardesty, OK. On November 18, 1955 he married Daryl Zeigler at the First United Methodist Church in Liberal, KS Toby Grew up in the Oklahoma Panhandle then moved to Liberal where he graduated from Liberal High School, class of 1952. After High School Toby went into the service with the US Army during the Korean War. After he returned home from Korea he moved to Wichita, KS. He obtained his Bachelors Degree from OPSU then went on to obtain three Master's Degrees. Toby had many notable achievement throughout his career as an educator including- assisting with the development of South Junior High, from which he also served as a Counselor from 1969-1973; Counselor for the Liberal Area Vocational School from 1973-1993; Director of the Liberal Area Vocational School from 1993 until his retirement in 1997; and Serving as a Seward County Commissioner. Toby enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, fishing, and singing in the church choir. He was a member of the Teacher's Union, Liberal Trail Riders, and the First United Methodist Church of Liberal. Toby is survived by his loving wife Daryl, Two Sons- Michael Hale and wife Kathy of Liberal, KS, Pat Hale of Liberal, KS; One Grandson- Justin Hale. Nine Great Grandchildren- Kyler Hale, Allison Hale, Emily Polk, Helana Combs, Connor Combs, Harper Combs, Jordan Polk, Carter Polk, Madelyn Combs; One Sister- Reida Houtz of Elkhart, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents; Granddaughter- Miranda Hale; Two Brothers- Paul Gene Hale and Roy Hale; One Sister- Myrna Witzki. Viewing will be held on Wednesday from 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, December 28, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Keith Anglemyer, officiating. Burial will follow at the Liberal City Cemetery.
